Making Spatial Decisions Using GIS: Our World GIS Education, Level 4

Back

Making Spatial Decisions Using GIS takes geographic information system (GIS) beyond cookbook lessons and introduces students to the power of decision making using geospatial technologies. Making Spatial Decisions Using GIS is a student resource text recommended for grades 13 and upwards.

The fourth volume in the Our World GIS Education series features techniques that encourage the use of GIS in solving problems and making decisions. Designed for high school and college students, the projects build on the rich array of GIS tools available, enabling the students to perform sophisticated analyses in a variety of content areas. This book encourages readers to make decisions and ultimately to create their own analysis to investigate and answer questions based on real-world concerns.

Kathryn Keranen is a retired teacher. She was instrumental in introducing Global Positioning System (GPS), GIS, and remote sensing into the geosystems curriculum in Fairfax County, Virginia. After retiring, she became a private consultant and an authorized K–12 ESRI instructor. She has consulted for various universities and is an adjunct instructor at James Madison University and Towson University.

Robert Kolvoord is a professor of integrated science and technology at James Madison University (JMU). His main research interests focus on the use of geospatial technologies in K–12 classrooms. He administered a variety of professional and curriculum development grants and workshops to help teachers bring these technologies to their classrooms. Prior to arriving at JMU, Dr. Kolvoord worked at the University of Arizona, where he was a founder of the nonprofit Center for Image Processing in Education. He has conducted workshops and given presentations around the world in the use of data visualization technology in education.
