Windows User’s Guide to DOS: Using the Command Line in Windows 95/98

It may be true that MS-DOS is dead as a stand-alone operating system. However, command syntax, parameters, parsing commands, and troubleshooting are all handled better from the command line interface than in Windows. This textbook explores these concepts using the MS-DOS window in Windows 95 or Windows 98. A careful step-by-step approach leads students from a basic to a sophisticated use of the command line interface. Each chapter includes assignments that allow students to apply their knowledge and prove their mastery of the subject through critical-thinking skills.

One of the obstacles in teaching the command line interface is the esoteric nature of the operating system. This is particularly true now that the world has moved to Windows 95 and Windows 98. Two simple shareware applications have been provided on disk with this book to lend practical experience: a database (Home Phone Book) and a spreadsheet (The Thinker).

This text provides students with many opportunities to manipulate prewritten data files and program files. This approach provides real-life experience in working with the hard disk or server without risking damage to either. These files and programs are provided on the ACTIVITIES disk bundled with the book.
