Raphael Semmes dominates the history of
Confederate naval operations in the American Civil War. Although
the U.S. Navy vastly outnumbered the Confederates at sea, Semmes
roamed the oceans in the CSS Alabama with impunity, capturing
nearly one hundred Federal merchant ships. Revered in the South as
a hero, the Union loathed and feared the Yankee-hating Semmes.
Historian and biographer John M. Taylor illustrates how Semmes
struck fear into the hearts of ships' crews and passengers alike.
